Pet the Dog is an abstract narrative game told through mini-games in a "dream-like" environment. The themes are nostalgia and accepting the loss of a beloved fluffy one.

Pet the Dog - Gameplay Trailer

"A Museum of Memories"

Responsibilities

- I scripted all the 3D and 2D character controllers for the different scenes and their interactions with various game components

- I set up all the characters and environment animations and triggers for when the player progressed through the game

- Built 4 different minigames that represent the narrative of the story in a dream-like state

- Constructed all the scenes and set dressing including the main room and 2D minigames

- Co-authored the narrative that is told primarily through the minigame messages and environmental visual storytelling

A Dream-like Museum

  • "A museum of memories" - A space to evoke nostalgia and revisit memories

  • The 3D space is split into two different themes

    • A grassy playground where you first meet the dog

    • A mysterious setting with paintings of the dog and pedestals that hold a symbolic object tied to the memories

  • 2D spaces for the memories - minigames representing each one

We wanted the 3D sequences to make the player feel like they were there in the moment, though its only a dream. The 2D spaces take the player out of the dream moment and places them in something that feels hazy, whimsical, and fanciful

Programming

  • All Mechanics/Interactions - jumping, collecting, narrative triggers, progression markers, and more

  • 4 Minigame systems

  • Animations of all items and characters

Fetch game memory inspired by the Pachinko machines from Japan

Minigame Design

Hide-n-Seek

  • 2D character controller physics-based movement. Search different rocks to find the dog

Tug-of-War

  • Every second, the rope moves as the dog pulls the rope.

  • Player spam presses the key, evoking constant physical strain, to pull back

Walking the Dog

  • Focuses on the emotional and calming aspect. The player and the dog simply move across the park.

  • When the player reaches a tree, a squirrel runs away.

Pet the Dog

  • The player gets to express their full love for the dog after playing the other games.

  • They press the space bar 100 times to pet the dog.
